Borussia Dortmund ramp up intensity: Niko Kovac eyes strong start despite injury hurdles

After the final open training session, attended by 1,800 passionate supporters, Kovac highlighted the rigorous work ethic on display, according to reports from Kicker.

"Even today, despite it being an open session, we still worked physically. The boys have had some tough days, especially Tuesday's session, which was very demanding," Kovac said.

While acknowledging that Dortmund are not yet operating at peak levels, Kovac pointed to promising signs from pre-season data and friendlies. "Based on the test matches and the data we've collected, we're at a solid level. Of course, friendlies are one thing and competitive matches are another, but I'm happy with where we're at right now," he added.

With the DFB-Pokal kick-off against Rot-Weiss Essen looming on August 18, followed by Bundesliga encounters with St. Pauli and Union Berlin, Kovac stressed the need for swift decisions on his lineup.

"We still have work to do, but just like last season, we'll fine-tune during the early part of the campaign. Everything should be in place by the international break," he explained.

Kovac also praised the competitive edge within the group, viewing selection dilemmas as a positive force. "There will be borderline decisions, and that's a good thing. I'd rather have tough choices to make than a clear-cut starting eleven. It means we have real competition, and that pushes everyone," he said.

"They've understood that every training counts. Everyone's fighting for their spot, and that's the spirit we need."

On the injury front, Kovac provided updates on key players. "Nico (Schlotterbeck) is doing more and more on the pitch. He worked hard in the gym over the past weeks, and now he's back on the grass, although still avoiding physical contact," he noted.

Regarding Emre Can, Kovac added: "He's improving, but we're not going to rush him. I want Emre fully fit and healthy."

Cole Campbell sat out Friday's session with a thigh problem, while Almugera Kabar and Ramy Bensebaini were given rest following a minor on-field collision earlier in the week. Recent reports indicate Dortmund traveled to the camp with additional injury concerns, including Julien Duranville alongside Schlotterbeck and Can.

The club have adopted a highly isolated approach during the stay in Saalfelden, amid ongoing transfer frustrations and fan discontent, with questions swirling around Kovac's management.

Dortmund continue to pursue reinforcements, with efforts underway for a potential third return of Jadon Sancho from Manchester United.

Other targets reportedly include Carney Chukwuemeka, Facundo Buonanotte, and Santiago Gimenez, as the club aim to bolster their options before the window closes.
