Can Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga fill the Toni Kroos void at Real Madrid?

The sacking of Carlo Ancelotti and the appointment of Xabi Alonso as manager signalled a new direction, alongside a defensive overhaul with the arrivals of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Leny Yoro, and Dean Huijsen.

These signings addressed clear weaknesses in the backline, a concern Ancelotti had flagged after injuries to Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao.

However, one critical area remains untouched: the creative midfield role. The departure of Toni Kroos last year left a gaping hole in Real Madrid's engine room, and the debate over who can orchestrate their play continues to dominate discussions among fans and pundits.

"We need someone to take control when the game gets stuck," Ancelotti had said before his exit, a sentiment echoed by Alonso in recent weeks.

Speculation has linked several names to the role, with Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi heavily tipped. However, the Basque midfielder made it clear as early as spring that Arsenal were his destination, a move confirmed by posts on X last month.

As pre-season training kicks off at Valdebebas tomorrow, Real Madrid have shown no appetite for splashing out on a new playmaker, leaving their midfield balance under scrutiny.

Step forward Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga, who are now set to shoulder the responsibility.

Tchouameni, formerly of Monaco, has often been forced into a centre-back role during defensive crises, disrupting his rhythm as a holding midfielder. "I'm at my best controlling the tempo in midfield," he said last season, frustrated by his makeshift duties.

Similarly, Camavinga's versatility has been both a blessing and a curse. The young Frenchman has alternated between his preferred central role and stints at left-back, diluting the explosive impact he made in his debut season at the Bernabeu.

"He's a game-changer, but he needs stability," Alonso noted recently, hinting at a defined role for the 22-year-old.

With no new signings imminent, Tchouameni and Camavinga are poised to be the heartbeat of Alonso's side.

Tchouameni will anchor the midfield with his positional discipline, while Camavinga's dynamism and flair will add an attacking edge.

Neither is a like-for-like replacement for Kroos, but their blend of control and chaos could yet prove the answer to Real Madrid's midfield conundrum.
