Michael Vaughan admits England 'panicked' on the final day against India
Former England captain Michael Vaughan has criticised England's performance on the final day of the fifth Test against India, claiming the team "panicked" without Ben Stokes.
The fifth and final day started with England needing 35 runs to win with four wickets in hand, and the first ball was belted to the boundary by Jamie Overton to reduce the target.
India though did not relent and the impressive Siraj dismissed overnight batter Jamie Smith, caught behind by wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel.
Siraj, leading the India attack in the absence of the injured Jasprit Bumrah, then took the wicket of Overton with an lbw that the batter reviewed but replays showed the ball was clipping leg stump.
England's number 9 Gus Atkinson then swung lustily to make his way to 17 and reduce the target even further but lost Josh Tongue at the end, bowled by Prasidh Krishna.
The drama was far from complete as last man Chris Woakes walked to the crease with his left arm in a sling due to a dislocated shoulder suffered on the first day to support Atkinson.
At that stage the home team still needed 17 runs to win and Atkinson reduced that deficit to a single digit, with Woakes just running for all his worth, but with one hit away from glory Siraj castled the lower-order batter with a perfect yorker to end the contest.
Siraj, the only bowler from either side to play all five matches in the series, finished with figures of 5-104 in 30.1 overs while Krishna took 4-126.
