Former Orlando Pirates defender set for Durban City return

Former Orlando Pirates defender set for Durban City return

The KwaZulu-Natal outfit are believed to be closing in on the experienced right-back following his departure from Pirates, as they continue strengthening ahead of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership campaign and their CAF Confederation Cup participation.

Pirates recently confirmed Shandu's exit, bringing an end to his four-year spell in Soweto. Since becoming available, interest in securing his services has grown, but Durban City seem to have positioned themselves at the front of the queue.

According to Soccer Laduma, negotiations are progressing and the move could be finalised as early as next week, allowing the defender to join the club in time for pre-season preparations.

A return would carry extra significance for Shandu, who previously represented the club during its days as Maritzburg United before eventually earning his move to Orlando Pirates.

Durban City's push for experienced reinforcements comes after qualifying for next season's CAF Confederation Cup through their Nedbank Cup triumph. The club is understood to be targeting players with continental and top-flight experience as they prepare for the demands of balancing domestic and African competition.

Shandu's arrival would not only strengthen their defensive options but also provide leadership and valuable experience from his years at Pirates, where he featured in high-pressure domestic and continental campaigns.

City have already secured one addition, completing the permanent signing of Fezile Gcaba after his loan spell from Richards Bay.

Off the pitch, the club has also moved to strengthen its technical team by appointing former Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef as head coach. Youssef reportedly continues to work closely with management as Durban City shape a squad capable of making an impact next season.
