Gary Kirsten: There is no doubt about the talent which Sri Lanka is known for

The 58-year-old former Proteas and India coach began his new role last week on a two-year contract, which will see him take Sri Lanka to the 2027 ODI World Cup that will be held in his home country of South Africa.

"I need to understand the culture really well, understand what makes the players tick, understand the environment," Kirsten told reporters at his first a press briefing.

"There is no doubt about the talent of the players which Sri Lanka is known for. My main concern is to create consistency among the players.

"I think whats important for me is to find the best balance and identify the particular roles particular players can play."

Kirsten will be stepping into big shoes having filled the vacant role after the departure of legendary Sri Lanka player Sanath Jayasuriya.

Sri Lanka recently co-hosted the T20 World Cup alongside eventual champions India, but exited at the Super Eights stage after a decisive 61-run defeat to New Zealand.

Kirsten added: "I have to see whats needed in the team. I'm pretty excited. There's lots of talent in the country.

"I think we all like see team performing well in all formats at best they can. I expect to take this talented group of Sri Lanka cricketers and make them perform versus the best in the world.

"I'm comfortable with e processes in place and that the team is moving in the right direction which is important. What's important for me is to be behind the team. Everybody (players) wants to perform which is what matters."
