Hashim Amla makes successful transition from legendary player to batting coach

The now 36-year-old Van der Dussen already works with Amla at the Lions in South African domestic cricket and the pair will continue to build the relationship in the T20 franchise tournament.

Amla, of course, will forever be etched in Proteas folklore after scoring South Africa's first-ever triple-century in Test cricket against England in 2012.

The 'Mighty Hash', as he was known in his playing days, was recognised for his achievements when he was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame earlier this year.

Amla has now made the transition from legendary player to batting coach, and his wisdom is invaluable - even to someone as experienced as Van der Dussen as the batter continues to fine-tune his game.

"It's a luxury I have for having him at the Lions," Van der Dussen said before a training session at Newlands.

"I came into the Lions setup a little bit under-prepared (in this season's CSA T20 Challenge), I think.

"There was one or two technical things that was out of sync and Hashim immediately sort of caught on to that and we've been focusing on some of that stuff ever since.

"Our first training session (with MI Cape Town), we sort of reminded each other what we spoke about a few weeks ago.

"He has got a very keen eye, obviously. He is one of the best in the world. I'm just lucky and privileged to have a guy like that. As a batter, you need that. Sometimes you feel something, but you can't see it. And sometimes vice versa.

"To have an objective eye, looking at your game - remember this is what you need to do - this is what you need to focus on. It's great to have a guy like him."

Van der Dussen, Ryan Rickelton and Reeza Hendricks formed a potent top three for MI Cape Town when they won their maiden SA20 trophy last season.

It just so happens that all three batters plays for the Lions, and have Amla as a guiding hand in the dressing room.

Hendricks added: "It's a bonus having Hash with us for the whole season, even though it is different tournaments.

"He knows where we are at with our game, especially if we are not playing as well as we would like. He picks up things and obviously helps up hopefully turn it around as quick as possible."
