India great Ajinkya Rahane has officially announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket with immediate effect.
India captain Shubman Gill 'absolutely fine' ahead of Test series in Sri Lanka
Gill did not take the field on the first two days of the tour game against a Sri Lanka Cricket XI but contributed 44 off 54 balls as India successfully chased down a target of 207 in the final day.
The visiting skipper sat out only as a precaution but will be ready ready to lead the side, according to India spin-bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule.
"It was just a precaution more than anything else," Bahutule said after the end of the tour game. "Gill has been absolutely fine and he's been training and the management decided we could just take the precaution of not putting him in the first day.
"The way he batted in the second innings was flawless and he's very much ready for the Test match."
India have had to deal with plenty of injuries ahead of the Test seeries with kingpin fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah and top-order batter Sai Sudharsan ruled out of the tour.
Sarfaraz Khan has been added to the squad as batting while uncapped seamer Auqib Nabi has also been called up.
The series in Sri Lanka will be part of the World Test Championship in which India currently sit in fifth spot after four wins and as many losses from nine games.
