Ipswich Town relegated from Premier League following defeat to Newcastle United

The visitors, who required a victory to retain even a mathematical chance of survival, were reduced to ten men in the first half when defender Ben Johnson received two yellow cards in quick succession. The dismissal only compounded the challenge for an Ipswich side already struggling to contain a dominant Newcastle attack.

The match began with Newcastle asserting their intent, controlling possession and creating numerous chances. Although Bruno Guimaraes had a goal disallowed in the 22nd minute for obstructing Ipswich goalkeeper Alex Palmer, the pressure was unrelenting.

Johnson's first booking came in the 30th minute for simulation, and he was dismissed just seven minutes later after pulling back Alexander Isak during a Newcastle counter-attack.

Newcastle eventually broke the deadlock in first-half stoppage time. Julio Enciso was penalised for a foul on Jacob Murphy in the box, allowing Isak to convert from the penalty spot and give the hosts a deserved lead.

Eleven minutes into the second half, Dan Burn doubled Newcastle's advantage with a well-taken header from a set piece. The result was sealed in the 71st minute when substitute William Osula scored with a commanding header just two minutes after coming on.

The victory lifts Newcastle to third in the Premier League table on 62 points, narrowing the gap to second-placed Arsenal and maintaining their push for a place in next season's UEFA Champions League. For Ipswich, however, the loss leaves them stranded on 21 points, 15 adrift of safety with only four matches remaining - confirming their return to the Championship after just one season in the top flight.
