John Stones injury puts England place at risk ahead of Uruguay clash

The 31-year-old's latest setback casts doubt on his availability for the Three Lions, with England manager Thomas Tuchel closely monitoring his condition.

Stones, who joined Manchester City from Everton in 2016 as one of Pep Guardiola's first signings, has been a key figure in the club's domestic and European success.

However, injuries have repeatedly disrupted his career, and this season has been no different. He has played just 968 minutes across all competitions – 353 in the Premier League, 343 in the Champions League, and 272 in domestic cups – far below the levels of his standout 2022-23 campaign.

Guardiola remains a fan of Stones' ability, but Manchester City are prepared for his departure when his contract expires in June. The club's defensive options are strong, with Abdukodir Khusanov impressing in form, Vitor Reis performing well on loan in Spain, Max Alleyne returning from Watford, and Marc Guehi arriving in January 2026.

Tuchel, who admires Stones from his Chelsea days, must weigh the defender's ongoing injury concerns as England prepare for the 2026 World Cup. It is uncertain whether Stones will recover in time for England's second friendly against Japan on Tuesday. Manchester City could recall him to the Etihad to ensure he is fit for the final league and FA Cup run-in.

With Stones' fitness in doubt, England may have to reconsider their defensive options as the countdown to the World Cup continues.
