Kaizer Chiefs defender Aden McCarthy credits Moldova trial for his mental growth

Kaizer Chiefs defender Aden McCarthy credits Moldova trial for his mental growth

The 22-year-old centre-back has enjoyed an impressive breakthrough season for the Soweto giants, making 30 appearances across all competitions, including 22 starts in the Betway Premiership.

Having captained Chiefs' DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) side, McCarthy made his first-team debut last season and has steadily become one of the club's most reliable young performers.

McCarthy, the son of former Chiefs defender Fabian McCarthy, revealed that a lengthy trial spell in Moldova earlier this year played a major role in shaping his mentality and professionalism.

The young defender spent nearly six weeks training with Moldovan side Sheriff Tiraspol, who were reportedly impressed with his qualities. However, the club ultimately decided to pursue a more experienced central defender instead of offering him a contract.

"I was five and a half weeks in Moldova on trial, almost two months to be exact. The experience made me a man to survive in this sport and in this industry," he said, as quoted by FarPost.

He added that the experience taught him valuable lessons about discipline and professionalism.

"It showed me how to become a professional, how to control what I can and just focus on doing what I want to do for my family, for myself and for my career," the defender explained.

Despite growing calls for him to be considered for Bafana Bafana's 2026 FIFA World Cup squad, McCarthy insists he remains grounded ahead of coach Hugo Broos naming his final selection next week.

Meanwhile, the defender warned that Chiefs would not hand struggling Chippa United any favours in Saturday's league clash at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
