Marco Jansen's final-over heroics power Punjab Kings past Rajasthan Royals

On a sun-scorched Jaipur evening where temperatures crossed 42 degrees celsius, the IPL finally resumed with its first completed match since the pause - and it didn't disappoint. With playoff spots on the line and momentum up for grabs, both teams turned in explosive performances in a match that saw 428 runs and a nail-biting finish.

Punjab, opting to bat, got off to a shaky start - slumping to 34 for 3, including a two-ball duck from debutant Mitch Owen. But from the ruins rose left-hander Nehal Wadhera, who played a blistering knock of 70 off just 37 balls. He was ably supported by skipper Shreyas Iyer (30), steadying the innings with a 67-run partnership.

After Iyer's departure, Shashank Singh stepped up with a statement knock-an unbeaten 59 off 30 balls, featuring five boundaries and three towering sixes. Afghanistan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai added the final fireworks with a rapid-fire 21 not out off just nine deliveries. Punjab posted a formidable 219 for 5.

Rajasthan's reply was electric. Yashasvi Jaiswal (50 off 25) and teenage prodigy Suryavanshi Vaibhav Suryavanshi (40 off 15) came out all guns blazing, rocketing to 89 in the first six overs. The 14-year-old Suryavanshi, already an IPL sensation after a record-shattering century earlier in the season, showed no signs of slowing down, hammering four fours and four sixes.

But Punjab's tactical shift to spin in the fifth over flipped the script. Impact sub Harpreet Brar, with a masterclass in left-arm spin, removed both openers in quick succession, halting Rajasthan's momentum. Brar finished with an impressive 3 for 22.

Omarzai then chipped in with crucial wickets, including captain Sanju Samson (20) and the dangerous Shimron Hetmyer (11). Still, Rajasthan refused to go down quietly. Dhruv Jurel mounted a gutsy fightback with a 53 off 31, keeping the Royals in the hunt till the very end.

With 22 needed off the final over, Marco Jansen held his nerve. Mixing pace and length with clinical precision, he dismissed Jurel and snuffed out the Royals' last hope, sealing Punjab's win and tightening their grip on a playoff berth.

With this win, Punjab moved to second in the table, tied with RCB on 17 points from 12 matches. The top of the leaderboard is now tightly contested, with just a handful of games remaining before the rescheduled final on June 3.

After a dramatic rainout on Saturday, the IPL is back - and if this clash was any indication, the final stretch promises fireworks, fever, and ferocious cricket.
