Matthew Potts drafted into England squad for final Ashes Test in Sydney

Matthew Potts drafted into England squad for final Ashes Test in Sydney

The fast bowler has been a unused member of the touring group for the first four Test matches as England find themselves 3-1 down going into the final encounter.

Potts is set to now get his opportunity after Gus Atkinson was sustained a hamstring strain in the Boxing Day Test.

Atikinson's injury follows that of fellow paceman Mark Wood and Jofra Archer who have both been sent home after picking up knocks during the series.

Speaking at the SCG, England batter Zak Crawley championed the inclusion of Potts, particularly his work-rate and attitude in the nets over what has been a long two months in Australia.

"Every time I face him he impresses me," Crawley said. "He's got the heart of a lion, a lot of skill, and if he gets the nod this week, he thoroughly deserves it."

The tourists have selected spinner Shoaib Bashir in the 12-man squad, although it is unlikely that the spinner will be picked in the final XI.

England squad for fifth Ashes Test: Ben Stokes (captain), Shoaib Bashir, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Matthew Potts, Joe Root, Jamie Smith (wk), Josh Tongue
