Pitso Mosimane believes Bafana Bafana can go all the way at AFCON

Mosimane, the most successful coach in South African football history, believes Bafana Bafana have every chance of challenging for honours at the 2025 AFCON finals in Morocco, despite not being viewed as outright favourites. South Africa open their Group B campaign against Angola on Monday.

Writing in his News24 column, the former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly mentor praised the work done by the current technical team led by Hugo Broos.

"Hugo Broos, Helman Mkhalele and the rest of the technical team have done a good job in putting this team together. They've got it right," Mosimane said.

"That's why the team is playing in back-to-back AFCONs, finished third at the last tournament and are now going to the World Cup."

Mosimane highlighted Bafana's improved balance and physical readiness, crediting Premier Soccer League clubs for investing heavily in conditioning and sports science.

"The team can vary their game and be physical when needed. PSL clubs deserve credit for investing in sport science, and Bafana adding more analysts and sport scientists puts them in a strong position."

While acknowledging South Africa lack global superstars, Mosimane believes that could work in their favour.

"The continent is focused on teams like Ivory Coast, Egypt, Nigeria, Senegal and Morocco. They have players in the biggest leagues in the world," he said.

"We don't have that tag. Most of our players are from the PSL, with only Lyle Foster playing in England. But PSL teams are not easy to play against."

Mosimane added that Bafana's unique style makes them dangerous opponents.

"Our short passing game is different to most teams in Africa. That frustrates opponents," he said.

"African football is a different beast. You can't win matches on paper. Hunger, belief and teamwork matter more than big names."
