Pitso Mosimane set to return as Bafana Bafana coach

Pitso Mosimane set to return as Bafana Bafana coach

The decision was taken during SAFA's NEC Extraordinary Meeting at SAFA House on Saturday, 8 August 2026, with the association now expected to finalise the remaining details before formally announcing Mosimane as Hugo Broos' successor.

SAFA president Danny Jordaan confirmed that the NEC had backed the former Bafana coach, although he indicated that some administrative matters still needed to be concluded.

"The NEC has approved the appointment of coach Pitso to Bafana Bafana, but we still need to tie up some loose ends. We will make a formal announcement of the coach next week," said Jordaan after the meeting, as quoted on the SAFA website.

Mosimane's return would mark another chapter in his decorated relationship with the national team. He previously guided Bafana Bafana between 2010 and 2012 and would now inherit a squad that recently enjoyed a historic FIFA World Cup campaign.

Bafana qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup for the first time in 24 years and reached the knockout stage for the first time in the country's history.

The team secured their place in the second round after beating South Korea 1-0 in Monterrey, Mexico, with Thapelo Maseko scoring the decisive goal.

Broos stepped down from his position following the World Cup campaign, leaving SAFA searching for a successor capable of building on the progress made under the Belgian tactician.

Jordaan said the NEC meeting was robust, with members engaging extensively on the matters before them.

The NEC was also briefed on preparations for SAFA's Elective Congress, scheduled for 12 September 2026, with nominations for various positions already submitted to the Governance Committee.

Meanwhile, Jordaan wished Banyana Banyana well ahead of their WAFCON 2026 quarter-final against Morocco on Saturday night with the match also carrying significant importance in their bid to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil.
