Proteas batter David Bedingham ruled out with quadriceps muscle injury

Proteas batter David Bedingham ruled out with quadriceps muscle injury

Bedingham was not selected in the Proteas squad for the upcoming Test series in India and it has now been confirmed that the 31-year-old will not play any part in the domestic T20 Challenge competition.

Bedingham's home union, Western Province, wrote in a statement: "David Bedingham has been ruled out of the T20 Challenge with a right quadriceps muscle injury.

"He is currently progressing through his structured rehabilitation program under the supervision of the Cricket South Africa High Performance team."

Proteas head coach Shukri Conrad had previously stated that Bedingham's omission for the series against India was because there are better players of spin.

The Proteas have opted to keep faith with most of the side that did duty in the recent drawn Test series in Pakistan, where Bedingham was part of the squad but did not play any of the two matches.

"I think we're in a fortunate position that we can pick horses for courses," Conrad said.

"I think the guys that did duty in Pakistan in the Test matches have shown what they're capable of and a case can be made for all of them to be re-selected.

"The reason why they got selected ahead of David was because I feel that in these conditions they'll be more effective. It doesn't mean that it's the end of the road for David.

"It wasn't so long ago that he was one of our star performers at Lord's, you know, so really horses for courses."

Western Province start their CSA Challenge campaign on Sunday when they will host the North West Dragons at Newlands.
