PSG gain Ligue 1 edge as Lens clash postponed

The clash, originally scheduled for 11 April, will now take place on 13 May, giving PSG extra time to prepare for their Champions League quarter-final against Liverpool. The decision was announced by the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP), who made it clear the move was part of a wider strategy to protect France's standing in European football.

In a statement, the LFP explained that the adjustment aligned with their "clear strategic aim" of maintaining the nation's fifth-place ranking in the UEFA coefficient table - a position that guarantees four Champions League spots.

PSG face a demanding schedule, hosting Liverpool just three days before the original Lens fixture before travelling to Anfield for the decisive second leg on 14 April. With the Ligue 1 title race finely balanced, the postponement could have a significant impact. PSG currently sit top of the table, just one point ahead of second-placed Lens, while also holding a game in hand.

However, the decision has not been universally welcomed. Lens had already voiced strong opposition earlier in the week, questioning the growing influence of European commitments on domestic scheduling.

In a pointed statement, the club warned of a "worrying sentiment" that Ligue 1 was becoming "an adjustment variable" shaped by the demands of clubs competing in Europe.

The reshuffle also affects Strasbourg, whose trip to Brest has been moved to the same May date to support their Europa Conference League quarter-final preparations against Mainz.

With both the title race and France's European ambitions on the line, the fixture changes have added another layer of tension to an already crucial stage of the season.
