Carlo Ancelotti, who will lead Brazil into the tournament across the United States, Mexico and Canada, has made it clear that selection will come down to performances on the pitch.
Speaking before Brazil's qualifier against Bolivia on Wednesday, the Italian underlined that reputation alone will not be enough to guarantee a spot.
"Obviously, memory counts. I know Rodrygo very well and I'm sure he can help the team," Ancelotti said. "We're evaluating around 70 players, physically, technically and tactically, to put together the most competitive team possible for the World Cup. There are no favourites; ultimately, the field will decide who goes to the World Cup."
Rodrygo's omission from the latest Brazil squad highlighted his delicate situation. While Vinicius Junior missed out through suspension and Eder Militao is still recovering from his second cruciate ligament injury, Rodrygo's absence was down to form.
He has started just twice under new Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso in nine matches, as Alonso has preferred a front pairing of Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius.
The 23-year-old has asked Alonso for opportunities on the left, where Vinicius usually plays, but the coach has been reluctant to alter his system. With Mbappe's place virtually guaranteed and Alonso often fielding only two forwards, Rodrygo's minutes have been limited.
Despite the setback, Ancelotti's words suggest the door remains open. Brazil are still experimenting with their squad, and Rodrygo's versatility, he can operate across the front line, could yet prove valuable. However, if he continues to struggle for game time at Madrid, his World Cup dream may depend on a late surge in form.
Rodrygo, who has scored 19 goals in 25 appearances for Brazil, is facing perhaps the most testing period of his career. Whether he can convince both Alonso and Ancelotti over the coming months will define his place in Brazil's World Cup plans.
