Samson's brilliant 97 sends India past West Indies into T20 World Cup semi-finals

India chased down a daunting target of 196 with four balls to spare in the decisive Super 8 clash, sealing second place in Group 1 and booking a semi-final showdown with England cricket team in Mumbai.

Samson's 50-ball innings, featuring 12 fours and four sixes, proved the cornerstone of the hosts' highest successful run chase in a T20 World Cup match. The opener remained composed throughout the chase and fittingly finished the contest himself, striking a six and a four off Romario Shepherd to spark celebrations among a capacity crowd of 67,000.

India's pursuit began shakily as Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan both fell cheaply, leaving the hosts under pressure early. Samson steadied the innings alongside captain Suryakumar Yadav, the pair adding a crucial partnership that kept the chase on track.

After Yadav departed for 18, Tilak Varma injected momentum with a brisk 27 from 15 balls, helping India maintain the required scoring rate. Samson continued to anchor the innings even as wickets fell at the other end, including Hardik Pandya for 17.

The West Indies briefly sensed an opportunity when Pandya was dismissed, but Samson remained unfazed. With support from Shivam Dube late on, the opener calmly guided India home with two decisive boundaries in the final over.

Earlier, the West Indies had posted an imposing 195-4 after being sent in to bat. A surprise move to promote Roston Chase to open alongside captain Shai Hope paid dividends as the pair gave their side a solid platform.

Chase top-scored with 40 from 25 balls while Hope added 32 before being bowled by Varun Chakravarthy. Shimron Hetmyer briefly accelerated the innings with a rapid 27 before edging behind off Jasprit Bumrah.

India had chances to restrict the total but were sloppy in the field, dropping three catches and missing a run-out opportunity. The mistakes proved costly as Rovman Powell and Jason Holder launched a fierce late assault.

The pair shared an unbroken 76-run stand, with Powell smashing 34 from 19 balls and Holder finishing unbeaten on 37 from 22 deliveries, helping the West Indies plunder 70 runs from the final five overs.

Despite the late surge, Samson's superb innings ultimately proved decisive as India completed the tournament's most dramatic chase to keep their title defence alive.

India will now face England in the semi-finals, while unbeaten South Africa national cricket team meet New Zealand national cricket team in the other last-four clash. The final will be held in Ahmedabad next Sunday.
