Simon Harmer and Codi Yusuf suffer defeats in English County Championship

Simon Harmer (Essex)

The Proteas off-spinner took only one wicket in the game but scored lower-order runs in his side's 41-run defeat against Warwickshire at Edgbaston.

Harmer was required to bowl only one over as the home team were 190 all out in the first innings as the seamers did the damage.

The 37-year-old, batting at number 8, then top-scored with 48 as Essex replied with 205 all out to gain a minimal advantage in the first innings.

The home team were then 220 all out second time around with Harmer returning figures of 1-65 in 18 overs to set up an intriguing run-chase with Essex needing 206 to win.

The visitors slipped to 112-8 before Harmer contributed 32 and put on a valuable partnership of 51 with Zaman Akhter (35) for the ninth wicket.

It was all in vain though as Essex were eventually bowled out for 164 to go down to their second loss in three first-class fixtures this season.

Codi Yusuf (Hampshire)

The seamer took three wicket first innings wickets but could not stop his team from going down to a two-wicket defeat at home against Somerset in what was a nail-biting contest at the Rose Bowl.

After Hampshire were bowled for 238 in the first innings, Yusuf then took 3-67 in 19 overs as the visitors replied with a total of 288 to take a 50-run lead.

The hosts fared better with the bat in the second innings after getting up to 336 all out, with Yusuf hitting a valuable 20 not out batting at number 9.

Defending a target of 287 in the fourth innings, Yusuf did not take any wickets as Somerset reached 288-8 with Tom Abell scoring a match-winning unbeaten 101.
