Sunderland make statement with capture of PSG's Nordi Mukiele

The Black Cats have snapped up France international Nordi Mukiele from Paris Saint-Germain in a deal that could rise to 12 million pounds. The 27-year-old defender, who spent last season on loan at Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen, has signed a four-year deal, becoming the 12th arrival in what's shaping up to be a transformative summer on Wearside.

Mukiele's signing pushes Sunderland's total transfer spend to an eye-watering 141.5 million pounds - just shy of the record for a promoted side, set by Nottingham Forest in 2022.

"It's a new challenge and I'm happy to be here," Mukiele said after putting pen to paper. "I felt the energy at the stadium - the atmosphere is incredible. The fans are everything here, and I'm ready to fight for them."

Sunderland, fresh off a commanding 3-0 win over West Ham in their top-flight return, are clearly aiming higher than mere survival. The club has reinforced across the pitch, with standout signings like Granit Xhaka, Brighton winger Simon Adingra, and a 30 million pounds move for Strasbourg midfielder Habib Diarra - their biggest signing ever.

Mukiele adds not only experience, with 35 appearances and five trophies at PSG, but also versatility. He's comfortable at both centre-back and right-back - a trait Sunderland's sporting director Kristjaan Speakman called "tactically invaluable" for the rigours of Premier League football.

"He brings rare athleticism and fits perfectly into the profile of this team," said Speakman. "This signing reflects our ambition."

While Sunderland have spent heavily, they've also recouped funds through smart sales, including Jobe Bellingham's move to Borussia Dortmund and Tom Watson's transfer to Brighton - bringing in around 37 million pounds combined.

Compared to their fellow promoted sides, Sunderland are setting the pace. Burnley's 13 additions have cost around 100 million pounds, while Leeds' eight signings total 73.5 million pounds.

With a squad full of fresh faces, Premier League pedigree, and a fanbase buzzing with belief, Sunderland's bold rebuild is setting the tone for what could be a thrilling new era at the Stadium of Light.
