Sunderland make statement with capture of PSG's Nordi Mukiele
Sunderland's return to the Premier League is gathering serious momentum - and their latest move proves they mean business.
Frank, who took over from Ange Postecoglou this summer, didn't shy away from singling out his striker after a performance that included two goals - the second a stunning scissor-kick finish that capped a 17-pass team move involving every outfield player.
"He was very good against PSG, and today he was exceptional," Frank said in his post-match comments. "His work-rate, driving the team forward, his link-up and hold-up play - he dominated. And then there were the two finishes. He deserves all the praise he's getting."
Richarlison, often criticised for inconsistency since arriving from Everton, took full advantage of a starting role in place of the injured Dominic Solanke. His early goal set the tone, but it was his second - a goal-of-the-season contender - that underlined his value to Frank's system.
The Danish coach, known for developing talent during his time at Brentford, made clear that Richarlison remains a key part of his plans after a pre-season where the forward had been linked with a potential move away.
"I have a striker who takes those chances and helps us win games," Frank continued. "He's had his struggles, but the performance department and medical staff have worked hard to get him back to this level - and he delivered."
The 28-year-old looked sharp throughout, offering a consistent outlet for Spurs in transition and showing a confidence in front of goal that had eluded him during large parts of last season.
"We've talked a lot about getting consistency from him," Frank added. "But if he keeps playing like this, he'll be one of the most important players in this squad."
Frank also highlighted the collective effort behind the result, especially after the team's short turnaround from their UEFA Super Cup loss to Paris Saint-Germain earlier in the week.
"It was a solid performance, not through the roof, but very professional after midweek. Big credit to the staff for preparing the players physically. The second goal - 17 passes, every player touched the ball - that shows where we're trying to go,"
"It's a dream start, sure. But what matters is what comes next. Today, we enjoy it. Tomorrow, we get back to work," concluded the former Bees boss.
With Richarlison firing and Frank's Spurs showing early signs of structure and belief, the new era in north London is off to a promising beginning.
