Temba Bavuma leads Proteas to one of their greatest ever Test victories in India

It was the Proteas' first Test victory in India in 15 years, the last coming in 2010, and makes sure they can't lose the two-match series.

Starting day three on 93-7, a lead of only 63, Bavuma and Corbin Bosch added a vital partnership of 44 to take the lead beyond 100 on what was a difficult pitch to bat on.

India turned to kingpin fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah to make the breakthrough and the paceman delivered when knocked over Bosch for 25.

Bavuma then reached his fifty, and in the context of the game it was so much more where no other player from either side had reached 40.

Mohammed Siraj came into the attack and cleaned up Siman Harmer and Keshav Maharaj as the tourists were bowled out for 153, Bavuma stranded on 55 no out, to leave India a target of 124.

Marco Jansen gave the visitors the perfect start when he removed opening pair Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul as the home side went to lunch on 10-2.

Washington Sundar and Dhruv Jurel added 32 for the third wicket but Harmer made the breakthrough when he removed Jurel, caught on the mid-wicket boundary.

Harmer then also took the wicket of the dangerous Rishabh Pant with India losing man after captain Shubman Gill unable to bat and in hospital because of neck spasms.

Ravindra Jadeja and Sundar then looked to forming a good stand, making it to 26 before off-spinner Harmer trapped Jadeja for 18 to leave India on 65-5.

Bavuma then had a moment of inspiration, tossing the ball to part-time spinner Aiden Markram and it did the trick as the vice-captain had Sundar caught a slip for a defiant 31 that came off 92 deliveries.

With only the tailenders for company, Axar Patel decided to go on the attack and hit Maharaj for two sixes and a four to reduce target to 31 but the left-arm spinner got his man as Bavuma held on to catch.

Maharaj then had Siraj caught by Markram at slip first ball to completew an epic victory that set off wild celebrations for the Proteas.
