This season's IPL suspended due to India-Pakistan political violence

The news comes after Thursday's IPL clash between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala was abandoned midway through the first innings.

At this time, the tournament is only expected to be suspended for one week.

"Further updates regarding the new schedule and venues of the tournament will be announced in due course," Devajit Saikia, honorary secretary of the Indian cricket board (BCCI), said in a statement.

"While cricket remains a national passion, there is nothing greater than the nation and its sovereignty, integrity and security of our country," the statement added.

The airport at Dharamsala has been shut down with players and staff of both teams traveling back Delhi by a special train organised by the IPL on Friday morning.

There have been 58 completed matches played at this year's tournament and the suspension comes with 12 games remaining in the group stages.

The Gujarat Titans are currently sitting at the top of the IPL standings while Rajasthan, Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad had already been eliminated from contention for a berth in the playoffs.
