A 2-1 defeat away to Sunderland on the final day confirmed Chelsea’s failure to qualify for European football next season, rounding off a campaign that has led to major reflection at Stamford Bridge.
“This season has been far below our standards and we need to review and see where we can improve for next time,” James said. “Just saying it doesn’t sound right. We’re a club that has won a number of European trophies and this season we haven’t even qualified. So, we have lots to learn and improve.”
Sunderland took control of the match through a Trai Hume finish and a Malo Gusto own goal, before a strong strike from Cole Palmer briefly raised hopes of a comeback for Chelsea.
However, the game swung decisively after a red card for Wesley Fofana left Chelsea with 10 men for over 30 minutes, and they were unable to find an equaliser that would have secured a place in the UEFA Europa League.
James admitted the result summed up the campaign. “We had chances in the first half and didn’t take them. If we had scored, the game would have been different. I never felt it was done until the final whistle, but we lacked the final touch.”
Looking ahead, James said standards must rise under new boss Xabi Alonso, who has been appointed to lead the rebuild. He added that Chelsea’s minimum requirement is clear.
“Competing and winning titles, and playing in Europe. That is the basics for this club.”
James will also join up with England ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026, but insists the focus now shifts firmly to rebuilding at club level.
