Zimbabwe's Tavenga Mukuhlani elected chair of Africa Cricket Association

The decision was confirmed during the ACA's annual general meeting in Singapore, where all 23 member associations voted unanimously in support of his appointment.

Mukuhlani's election comes as the ACA prepares to implement several strategic initiatives aimed at expanding cricket's footprint on the continent. These include the planned launch of a continent-wide Africa T20 competition, the revival of the Afro-Asia Cup, and the formal inclusion of cricket at the 2027 Africa Games in Egypt.

"We stand today at the threshold of a new era for African cricket - an era defined by stronger governance, broader opportunity, and renewed ambition," Mukuhlani said in a statement issued through Zimbabwe Cricket.

The ACA has undergone administrative reforms in recent months, including the adoption of a new memorandum of incorporation intended to improve governance and streamline operations. The two Full Members within the ACA - South Africa and Zimbabwe - are expected to play a leading role in these reforms.

Cricket was introduced at the Africa Games for the first time in 2023 in Ghana, where Zimbabwe won both the men's (with an emerging team) and women's tournaments. South Africa did not send full-strength squads. The ACA is now seeking to secure cricket's long-term place in the Africa Games framework and use the platform to attract additional funding and political support.

"These engagements are crucial not only for visibility but also for opening new doors of investment, policy support, and continental collaboration," Mukuhlani said.

Mukuhlani has chaired Zimbabwe Cricket since 2015 and has been re-elected three times. Under his leadership, ZC has eliminated much of its legacy debt, navigated a suspension by the International Cricket Council (ICC) over alleged government interference, and secured recognition for its women's national team on the ICC Future Tours Programme.

He currently sits on the ICC's finance and commercial affairs committee, which oversees budgeting and revenue distribution globally.

Zimbabwe's men's team has struggled on the global stage in recent years, failing to qualify for the past two ICC ODI and T20 World Cups. However, the country is set to co-host the 2026 ICC Under-19 Men's Cricket World Cup and the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup, alongside South Africa and Namibia.

The Africa Cricket Association, founded in 1997, aims to foster the growth of the sport across the continent through competition, development programs, and strategic partnerships.
