Alejandro Grimaldo admits Real Madrid talks before committing to Bayer Leverkusen

Alonso, who left Leverkusen to take charge at the Bernabeu, had considered taking the Spanish full-back with him, but a deal never materialised.

"There was always a possibility of joining Xabi; I had some conversations with him, but I would have had to get to Valdebebas and see how to organise it," Grimaldo told El Larguero.

"There was also the option to go to Barcelona and Atletico Madrid; as you can see, nothing materialised."

Despite interest from several of Spain's biggest clubs, Grimaldo chose to remain in Germany, where Leverkusen are adjusting to a new era under head coach Kasper Hjulmand. The Spaniard explained that while the summer brought significant change, he believes the squad can still compete strongly.

"Many players left, but we have a beautiful year ahead. It's true that the start has been difficult; new teammates have arrived, and we need more time to gel," he said.

"We started with Ten Hag for three games, but now we have Hjulmand, and things are going well."

Grimaldo, 30, was a standout performer in the 2023-24 season as Leverkusen lifted their first Bundesliga title. His attacking influence from left-back was central to Alonso's success, and his decision to stay is seen as crucial for Leverkusen's hopes of defending their crown.

While Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid explored the chance to bring him back to La Liga, Grimaldo has committed himself to Leverkusen's project and remains confident they can build on their historic 2023–24 campaign.
