Algeria book historic WAFCON semi-final spot with victory over Ivory Coast

Ivory Coast appeared to have the upper hand early on and were rewarded in the 29th minute when Ines Konan found the net to put her side ahead.

The Elephants then suffered a major setback shortly before the interval as Nsira Ouedraogo was dismissed in the 42nd minute.

Despite playing with 10 women, Ivory Coast reached the break with their advantage intact. Algeria, however, emerged with greater purpose after the restart, introducing Ines Khiri at half-time.

Khiri made an immediate impact by restoring parity in the 59th minute. Ivory Coast were handed an opportunity to regain the lead three minutes later when they were awarded a penalty, but Rebecca Elloh was unable to beat the goalkeeper from the spot.

Algeria capitalised almost immediately, completing the turnaround in the 64th minute. Marine Dafeur set up Amira Braham, who struck the decisive goal.

The victory marks a historic milestone for Algerian women's football, as the team secures its first-ever appearance in the WAFCON semi-finals. Beyond continental glory, the high-stakes encounter carried immense World Cup implications.

By advancing to the tournament's final four, Algeria automatically guarantees a prized qualifying spot for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup, representing a major breakthrough on the global stage.

Ivory Coast pushed hard for an equaliser during the closing stages, but Algeria resisted the pressure to secure a 2-1 victory and seal their progression to the last four.
