Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone wants Champions League glory legacy

In a candid interview with DAZN, the Argentine manager, who has guided the Rojiblancos since 2011, revealed his burning desire to secure the UEFA Champions League title and leave an enduring legacy at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Speaking to La Nacion, Simeone declared that Atletico Madrid have set their sights on winning the expanded FIFA Club World Cup. However, his aspirations extend far beyond global competitions. "Being third isn't enough anymore," he said in DAZN's Revelado documentary, which focuses on his tenure. "Our goal is to win the Champions League."

Simeone reflected on the club's journey, paying tribute to those who have shaped its success. "It's been years of hard work and heart from so many people," he said. "Colleagues like Oscar Ortega and Germán Burgos, who are no longer with us, poured everything into this club. We're building a legacy for those who come next."

The 55-year-old manager was unequivocal about his ultimate ambition. "The one image I'm missing is clear: lifting the Champions League trophy," he said. "There's no hiding from that."

Simeone also reserved high praise for Antoine Griezmann, Atletico's talismanic forward. "Antoine is an absolute legend for this club, both as a player and a person," he said. "When he left (for Barcelona in 2019), he realised his mistake within months.

"It wasn't easy for him to come back, but through hard work and goals, goals heal everything, he won the fans over again. The supporters are fair; they want winners, and Antoine is a true star."

The manager also highlighted the rise of Giuliano Simeone, his son, who has emerged as a promising talent. "I never imagined he'd reach this level so soon," Simeone said. "His success is all down to his dedication and drive. In the dressing room, I treat him like any other player. But he has something you can't coach: heart, soul, and a hunger to improve."

Reflecting on the club's identity, Simeone emphasised the importance of staying true to their roots. "The best thing Atletico Madrid have done is stay close to the fans," he said. "The badge is sacred to so many."

With Simeone at the helm, Atletico Madrid are poised to chase domestic and European glory, driven by a manager who refuses to settle for anything less than the top.
