Banyana Banyana edge Senegal on penalties to reach WAFCON semi-finals

The reigning champions, who topped Group C despite collecting only three points, were tested by a spirited Senegalese side that qualified for the knockouts as one of the best third-placed teams from Group A.

Banyana Banyana made one change to the starting line-up that thrashed Mali 4-0 in their final group match, with Sibulele Holweni coming in for Amogelang Motau.

The South Africans started brightly, and Karabo Dhlamini had an early fifth-minute chance, but failed to convert. Senegal responded swiftly, with Wolimata Ndiaye going close three minutes later.

In a tight and physical contest, chances were few and far between. South Africa's captain, Refiloe Jane, blazed over shortly after the restart, while Lebohang Ramalepe missed a golden opportunity in the 80th minute.

Senegal nearly snatched a winner in injury time, but the South African defence stood firm for a 0-0 draw after 90 minutes.

Extra time brought drama as Jermaine Seoposenwe played in Ramalepe, who found the net - only for the goal to be ruled out for offside. Seoposenwe later set up Hildah Magaia, who couldn't find the target.

With neither side able to break the deadlock, the tie was settled from the spot. Banyana Banyana were flawless, converting all four of their penalties, while goalkeeper Andile Dlamini emerged as the hero, saving two of Senegal's efforts.

The 4-1 shootout triumph sees South Africa book a semi-final showdown against fierce rivals Nigeria, as they continue their quest to retain the WAFCON crown.
