Barcelona chief says club still hopeful of signing Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez

Alvarez is Barca's main attacking target, but Atletico have repeatedly insisted the Argentina striker is not for sale. Barcelona have already had a bid understood to be worth more than 100 million euros rejected.

Laporta says Barcelona's offer remains on the table after receiving information that Atletico have discussed Alvarez with other clubs.

"We maintain our proposal, our offer to Atletico Madrid," Laporta said. "Hopefully there will be an understanding between the two clubs."

Barcelona's pursuit has caused tension between the clubs, with Atletico reporting the Catalan side to Spanish football authorities over their approach. The Madrid club have also made clear they do not want to sell Alvarez to a domestic rival.

The 26-year-old has indicated that he would like to leave Atletico, with Barcelona understood to be his preferred destination. Arsenal are also interested, while Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain have been linked with him.

Alvarez was jeered by sections of the Atletico support during Sunday's 2-2 draw with Villarreal and missed training on Wednesday because of illness.

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has admitted the club may need alternative options if the transfer fails. Raphinha started through the middle in the 5-0 win over Elche, while Fermin Lopez, Dani Olmo, Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi could also fill the role.

"I have total confidence with the quality we have now," Flick said.

With the deadline approaching, Barcelona remain determined to pursue Alvarez, but Atletico's stance leaves the transfer uncertain.
