Bayern Munich's dominance sparks referee controversy in Mainz defeat

Despite acknowledging that Bayern displayed a superior performance, Kohr felt that key refereeing decisions significantly aided the Bavarians.

"The 2-0 goal was offside, and I was run over a bit for the fourth. That was when I realised the referee was wearing a Bayern shirt," Kohr vented in an interview with Sky Germany, describing a "Bayern bonus" that seemingly favoured every minor decision towards the visitors.

Kohr admitted, "We have to ask ourselves why we conceded the goals," reflecting a balance of self-criticism alongside his frustration.

Mainz goalkeeper Robin Zentner also raised concerns about officiating, particularly after Jamal Musiala's second goal. "You don't need VAR for that. It's relatively clear; the situation is easy to judge. It wasn't even close," he remarked.

From the start, Bayern's pace overwhelmed Mainz. Musiala opened the scoring in just the second minute after a swift attack, setting the tone for the match.

Despite a brief moment of hope from Antony Caci, whose shot struck the side netting, Mainz fell further behind as Musiala netted again, this time from an offside position, followed by two quick goals just before half-time from Leroy Sane and Musiala to complete his hat-trick.

With the second half lacking urgency from Bayern and no comeback from Mainz, the game ended in a decisive victory, highlighting the gulf in class between the two teams.
