Unai Emery: Aston Villa can learn important lessons from Barcelona defeat
Unai Emery was left frustrated as Aston Villa's perfect start to their Champions League campaign came to an end with a 3-0 defeat against Barcelona at the Spotify Nou Camp.

The hosts made an immediate impact, taking the lead just seven minutes into the contest. A misplaced pass from Joao Gomes across the penalty area was intercepted by teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, who demonstrated excellent close control to move past Pau Torres before curling a superb finish into the far corner. The Barca number 10 now has 14 goals, surpassing the Champions League record set by Kylian Mbappe, who scored 13 times while still a teenager.
Villa responded positively and created several opportunities to equalise. Matty Cash and Victor Lindelof both saw their efforts following set pieces blocked, while Johan Manzambi squandered a promising opportunity after being played through by Nicolas Jackson. Manzambi later tested gloveman Joan Garcia, ensuring Barcelona remained under pressure before the interval.
Despite Villa's encouraging first-half performance, Barcelona doubled their advantage just seven minutes into the second stanza. Fermin Lopez worked hard to win possession and quickly released Raphinha, who drove a low effort towards goal. His shot took an unfortunate deflection off Pau Torres, wrong-footing Suzuki before finding the back of the net.
Raphinha completed his brace in the 64th minute following an excellent attacking move involving Joao Cancelo. The defender surged forward down the left flank before delivering a brilliant outside-of-the-boot pass into the six-yard area. Raphinha had timed his run perfectly and calmly turning the ball home for his 19th goal of the season. It was a special milestone for the Brazilian, who drew level with Ronaldinho on 94 goals for Barca.
With a three-goal advantage, Barcelona threatened to extend their lead further, although Suzuki denied Gordon a fourth goal. Villa also came close to finding a consolation when Leon Goretzka's header struck the post.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Hansi Flick praised his team's defensive performance.
"It was important to defend together and stay compact," he told the press.
"The defence put in a great performance, and so did Joan Garcia. When you see such young players (Farinas, Cubarsi, Gerard Martin) performing at this level in the Champions League, I’m very happy about that."
A few weeks ago, PSG ended Barcelona's 13-match winning run, then Spanish rivals Real Madrid piled on the disappointment by winning El Clasico five days later. As such, Flick was happy to bounce back.
"In life and in football, it’s not about whether you make mistakes or lose, it’s about how you react," he continued.
"We always look forward, and I’m happy with that. It’s important that we stay calm and focused on the plan."
