Chelsea's Cole Palmer and Reece James set to return for Brentford clash

Chelsea's Cole Palmer and Reece James set to return for Brentford clash

Both players missed the midweek Carabao Cup semi-final first leg as a precaution, but Rosenior sounded encouraged when speaking to the media at Cobham.

"With Reece and Cole, both of them are training today," Rosenior said. "We need to assess them after training and make sure they come through all of the protocols. If they do, it will be great to have them back in the squad and at the moment it looks like they could be available."

Chelsea face Keith Andrews' Brentford in a busy period of the season, and Rosenior stressed the importance of managing player fitness carefully.

There was less positive news regarding Liam Delap and Jamie Gittens, who both missed the cup match after falling ill.

"Liam is still at home recovering, as is Jamie," Rosenior said. "Our doctors are doing everything they can to contain what looks like a virus. Some members of staff have gone down with it as well.

"We spoke to the players about the basics like washing hands because it's really important. We've got a busy schedule and we need everyone fit and healthy."

Rosenior also provided an update on Romeo Lavia, who has been sidelined since early November. While the midfielder is not yet close to a return, his rehabilitation is progressing well.

"Romeo is back on the pitch doing his rehab, but not with the group yet," Rosenior added. "He's looking really good. The key thing is not pushing him too hard so that when he comes back, he's back for good.

"He's an outstanding footballer and I can't wait to have him back working with us."

Chelsea will hope positive news on Palmer and James continues as they prepare for the London derby against Brentford this weekend.
