World Rugby's disciplinary panel reportedly met at 1900 on Tuesday to review the incident, but even after five hours of debate, they could not come to a decision.
The panel has requested additional time to determine if Etzebeth's contact with the eye was 'reckless' or 'intentional'. The definition has an impact on the severity of the suspension. As per World Rugby's rules, 'reckless contact' with the eye(s) starts at six weeks minimum, while 'intentional contact' is at least 12 weeks.
Reports indicate the decision could be delayed until Sunday. Potentially impacting the decision to delay the outcome is the 2027 Rugby World Cup draw. The live draw takes place on Wednesday and any announcement regarding Etzebeth could reflect negatively on World Rugby.
While the footage is damning, in Etzebeth's favour is his sparkling disciplinary record. Saturday was the first straight red card he's received in 141 Tests.
