South Africa wrapped up their final fixture of the year with an impressive 2-0 victory over next year's Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) hosts Morocco in a friendly at the Stade d'Agadir on Tuesday.
The result capped off a challenging year in which Banyana were unable to defend their continental crown, but still managed to secure qualification for the expanded 16-team WAFCON - a tournament that will also double as the route to the next FIFA Women's World Cup.
Ellis expressed delight not only with the victory, but with the overall performance and growth displayed by both established players and emerging talents.
Youngsters Jessica Wade and Bonolo Mokoma were among those who earned minutes, and Ellis was particularly encouraged by their impact.
"I thought Jess came in early and gave a really good performance," Ellis said.
"Bonolo, we know what she can do - we saw that against DR Congo. Nthabiseng Majiya got to start today, and I thought Noxolo Cesane was outstanding as well. Defensively, across the whole team, we were really sound."
Banyana created several chances, with Karabo Dhlamini going close before Cesane finished clinically to put South Africa ahead.
"Nox took her goal so well. If you don't shoot, you don't score."
Ellis believes the win provides important momentum heading into the offseason - and into what promises to be a fiercely competitive WAFCON.
"It's a big confidence booster to end the year on a good note," she said.
"We've qualified for WAFCON, we've beaten the hosts, and that gives us great momentum. But we know the competition will be tough. It's also a World Cup qualifier, so we need to be even better. Today was a good step in the right direction."
