England's Ben Stokes relishes 'biggest series' of his captaincy ahead of Ashes opener

England's Ben Stokes relishes 'biggest series' of his captaincy ahead of Ashes opener

The English star previously led his nation in the 2023 Ashes series 2-2 draw against the Aussies in England, with the visitors retaining the famous urn.

Stokes has now marked the series as one of the most important of his Test career as he looks to bring back the Ashes title from Australia.

"I understand what this series means in my journey as England captain," said the 34-year-old on Thursday.

"It's certainly the biggest series I will lead this side in. I'm aware of that. Brendon [McCullum] is aware of that as coach. Rob Key is aware of that in his role [as managing director] as well."

The Englishmen has led his team in 37 Test matches, winning 22 matches with a 59.45 percent win ratio whilst establishing a bold and aggressive approach that is now known as 'Bazball'.

"I understand all the 'defining series' stuff. I get it. For me personally it's not going to detract from what I've given to my role as England captain," added Stokes on the eve of the first Test.

"It's something I've thoroughly enjoyed, and I wake up every morning loving what I do. "It's the greatest honour in English cricket to lead this team out. But I'm desperate to be an Ashes-winning captain."

The two teams are set to do battle in the first Test from 21-25 November at Optus Stadium in Perth.
