Fawaaz Basadien opens up on what sparked his Mamelodi Sundowns revival

The left-back made only 11 appearances across all competitions last campaign as he struggled to displace Aubrey Modiba, eventually falling out of favour at both club and international level. He consequently missed out on South Africa's Africa Cup of Nations and 2026 FIFA World Cup squads, with reports at the time suggesting he could seek a loan move.

His fortunes have changed significantly this season. Basadien has already made six appearances for the reigning champions and has been rewarded with a place in the Bafana Bafana preliminary squad for upcoming AFCON qualifiers against Guinea and Eritrea, as well as a friendly against Egypt.

The 29-year-old, who joined Sundowns from Stellenbosch after establishing himself as a leader and captain, says maintaining the right mentality while waiting for an opportunity proved crucial.

"I think it's just a matter of consistency as well as the belief I showed throughout my time since I arrived here," Basadien explained.

"It hasn't been the start I wanted to have, but with my belief, my positive mindset, and positive attitude, that's what kept me going. Eventually, when given a chance, I had to step up and take it, and I think I did that.

"It is a matter of just consistent performances now to maintain that level and even increase that level," he added.

Basadien's resurgence has come alongside an impressive start for Sundowns, who are unbeaten after six league matches. Five victories and a draw have left them top of the table on 16 points, three ahead of Orlando Pirates, who have played a game fewer.

Although Sundowns have not always looked completely secure defensively, their ability to find results has remained a major strength.

"One of our main strengths as a team is grinding out results," Basadien noted. "We keep a positive mindset and never give up, regardless of the scoreline or pressure. We always know we'll create a chance, and we just have to take it."

Their next challenge comes against Siwelele at Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday evening, shortly after the club parted ways with head coach Lehlohonolo Seema and assistant William Jackson.

Godfrey Mosoetsa has taken temporary charge, but Basadien is expecting a competitive encounter despite the coaching change.

"The incoming coach might keep some of the structure the players are used to," he said. "What's most important for us is to focus on ourselves and stick to what we want to achieve."
