Former Nigeria goalkeeper backs Stanley Nwabali's return to Chippa United

Nwabali recently rejoined the Eastern Cape outfit after months of uncertainty over his future. The Nigeria international had been linked with clubs in Europe and the Middle East following his impressive performances for both Chippa and the Super Eagles, but a transfer failed to materialise before the start of the new season.

While many expected the 29-year-old to secure a move overseas, Afelokhai believes returning to Chippa was the best decision for his career.

"Returning to Chippa United is the best decision Stanley Nwabali could have made. No serious club wants to sign a goalkeeper who isn't playing week in, week out," Afelokhai said, as quoted by Sports247.

The former Kano Pillars and Enyimba goalkeeper believes Nwabali understood the dangers of spending an extended period without competitive football. According to Afelokhai, regular game time is essential for maintaining confidence, sharpness and attracting future transfer interest.

He also praised Chippa United for giving the Super Eagles goalkeeper another opportunity to continue his career.

"I also commend Chippa United for giving him another chance. It shows they appreciate his quality and understand what he brings to the team," he added.

Nwabali's return also comes at an important time for Nigeria, with the Super Eagles set to resume their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign and begin preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers under head coach Eric Chelle.

The goalkeeper established himself as Nigeria's undisputed number one after his outstanding performances at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where he helped the Super Eagles reach the final.

Afelokhai believes that by playing regularly at Chippa United, Nwabali will not only strengthen his chances of retaining his place in the national team but also increase his prospects of earning a move abroad when the right opportunity presents itself.
