Former Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro cheers Monnapule Saleng's comeback

Saleng, 27, was a key contributor to Pirates' MTN8 triumph, but his role diminished last season. By December, he had been left out of matchday squads and has not featured for the club since, reportedly due to a salary dispute with management.

Riveiro reflected on the challenges he faced with Saleng during the 2024/25 season, acknowledging how their professional relationship deteriorated.

"Early in the season, he had a good pre-season and in our first game against Polokwane City, he scored just before half-time," Riveiro told Robert Marawa on 947.

"But I wasn't happy with his performance in the first 45 minutes. I tried to find out what was going on because he wasn't himself. We know Saleng and what he is capable of on the field."

The Spaniard admitted that his halftime approach may have contributed to the strain between them.

"During halftime, you don't have time to be kind and convince someone to play or not play. We make quick decisions," he said.

"I was harsh, and that marked the beginning of a difficult period between us."

Despite the past tension, Riveiro praised Saleng's recent resurgence.

"I am happy that Monnapule is playing football again and helping his team," Riveiro said. "He is showing the talent we know he has, and hopefully this is the start of good things for him. He is a good boy and deserves success."

Riveiro's remarks underscore not only his respect for Saleng's talent but also his satisfaction in seeing a former player overcome setbacks to regain confidence and form in the PSL.
