Gavin Hunt says Stellenbosch unfortunate not to beat Mamelodi Sundowns

The Brazilians took the lead through Katlego Ntsabeleng after 26 minutes, but Tshegofatso Mabasa ensured a share of the spoils with his 85th minute equaliser from the penalty spot.

Stellies had a number of good chances to win the tie, explained Hunt, who ultimately dented Sundowns' top-flight hopes as the teams shared a point in a 1-1 draw.

The result left Hunt's side in ninth place on the league standings with 32 points from 25 games and Sundowns in second place with 57 points from 24 games - one behind Orlando Pirates but with a game in hand.

Reflecting on the game, a disappointed Stellies boss explained that the game was there for the taking.

"Jeez, we could have been, before they scored, we had two big chances and then Omega (Mdaka) had the chance after halftime," Hunt said on IOL.

"And, you know, then we went one goal down, I said to them, we'll stay in the game here as long as we can. We will get the chance at the end because, you know, they'll come out and they did and we could have won it. So disappointing.

"But all in all, the team we had and the players we've got, everybody's played their part and from the top of the club to the bottom of the club and we will only get better. Believe in me, we will only get better. And once we do a few things and we'll get better.

"We had the chance. Devin should have scored in the first half. The keeper just did his bit, should have dinked it over the keeper. And then, you know, with Omega. And other than that, did they ever had any chances? No.

"How many times did we turn the ball over? We just didn't have the quality when we turned it over to make the final pass.

“But the way they play suits us because it's so slow and we can obviously just shuffle in and funnel in and then break out. And we did that and it worked. And I thought we should have won in the end.”
