George Matlou's Kaizer Chiefs career under scrutiny ahead of contract expiry

George Matlou's Kaizer Chiefs career under scrutiny ahead of contract expiry

The 27-year-old, who joined Chiefs after a productive spell at Moroka Swallows, is approaching four years at the Soweto giants, but his time on the pitch has often been limited, wrote KickOff.

Injuries have been the main reason for Matlou's lack of game time, with his current status once again sidelined. This season, with 10 games remaining, he has featured in only six matches, totaling 255 minutes, while missing 26 games - a number that could rise to 36 if he doesn't return before season's end.

Matlou's overall game involvement paints a concerning picture. Last season, he appeared in 15 of 35 matches, and the season before that only 10 of 35.

In his debut campaign, he played 15 out of 37. Across his four years, this averages out to participation in just one-third of Chiefs' matches.

The midfielder has managed only five full 90-minute games since joining Amakhosi, who have played 139 matches in that period. Despite operating in attacking midfield positions, he is yet to score a goal for the club.

These statistics - limited minutes, low match involvement, and absence of goals - will be central to any decision regarding Matlou's future at Chiefs as his contract approaches its conclusion.
