Hansi Flick hails 'world class' Robert Lewandowski return ahead of Athletic clash

Barcelona travel to San Mames on Saturday knowing a positive result could strengthen their push to defend the Spanish league title. Barca lead the standings by one point ahead of Real Madrid with a game in hand.

Speaking ahead of the game, Flick made it clear his side expect a difficult night against one of Spain's most competitive teams.

"Athletic are a fantastic side and I don't spend much time thinking about past results," Flick said. "We know it will be a tough test, especially at their stadium. But the mood in our camp is very good and I'm happy with the physical condition of the squad."

The Barcelona coach highlighted Lewandowski's return as a key factor for the team as the season enters its decisive weeks.

"There are still several weeks left in the season and we have two important objectives to fight for," Flick said. "I'm very satisfied with Robert. He is performing at an elite level. Having him back and available is huge because he is a world-class striker who can finish chances and score 25 or 30 goals."

Flick also confirmed that Pedri is fit but his playing time will be carefully managed due to the heavy schedule.

"Pedri is available, but with the number of games we have coming we must be careful with his minutes," he explained. "He's in good shape, but we need to manage his workload."

Meanwhile, Gavi will travel with the squad but is not yet ready to return to competitive action.

"He will be with the team, although he won't be available to play yet," Flick said. "He has taken another big step in his recovery and we will see how he progresses after this trip."

Flick also praised the versatility of Marc Casado, describing the young midfielder as an intelligent player capable of filling several roles.

"He can play as a pivot, further forward in midfield or even in other positions. He's a very intelligent footballer and I'm really happy to have him."

Reflecting on Barcelona's recent match against Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey semi-final, which they lost 4-3 on aggregate, Flick praised his players' determination.

"The feeling after that game was very positive," he said. "I saw a team that was highly motivated. When the connection with the fans is strong, the players find another level. Everyone gave everything, and although it wasn't quite enough, the team is playing at a very high level. That should give us confidence."
