South Africa may not have delivered their most complete performance in the Round of 32 clash, particularly going forward, but they once again showed the defensive resilience that became a trademark throughout their campaign. It ultimately took a stoppage-time strike to break their resistance and end a memorable run on the world stage.
Here's how the players rated:
Ronwen Williams - 7/10
Once again showed why he remains one of Bafana's most dependable performers. Produced important saves before the break and denied Canada substitute Tani Oluwaseyi in the second half. Had little chance with the late winner.
Khuliso Mudau - 7/10
Delivered another composed display at right-back. Balanced defensive duties well while offering support in attack and helped limit Canada's threat down his flank.
Ime Okon - 7/10
Continued his impressive tournament with another mature performance. His anticipation, positioning and ability to read the game helped keep Bafana competitive for long periods.
Mbekezeli Mbokazi - 7.5/10
Arguably among South Africa's standout performers. The young defender looked composed under pressure and dealt admirably with the movement of Canada's attacking players. A tournament that announced his arrival.
Aubrey Modiba - 6.5/10
A disciplined display from the left-back. Did not offer his usual attacking influence but remained organised defensively and combined well with Mbokazi.
Sphephelo Sithole - 7/10
Worked tirelessly in midfield and acted as Bafana's shield in front of the defence. Broke up attacks effectively and covered plenty of ground.
Teboho Mokoena - 5.5/10
Returned from suspension but never fully found his rhythm. Started brightly with an early long-range effort but struggled to maintain possession and influence.
Relebohile Mofokeng - 6/10
Canada clearly targeted him and limited the space he usually thrives in. Despite that, he still showed flashes of quality before being withdrawn at half-time.
Oswin Appollis - 6/10
Found opportunities difficult to come by as Canada stayed compact defensively. Came close with a powerful effort but could not make the decisive impact.
Thapelo Maseko - 6/10
Spent more time helping defensively than driving forward. Even so, his pace remained a threat whenever Bafana transitioned.
Evidence Makgopa - 5/10
Had a quiet evening with limited service in attacking areas. His pressing and work rate helped the team structure but he struggled to influence the game in the final third.
Substitutes
Thalente Mbatha - 6/10
Introduced after the break to strengthen midfield control. His arrival added defensive stability, although it reduced Bafana's attacking momentum.
