Barcelona are widely expected to search for a new centre-forward in the summer, with Robert Lewandowski approaching the end of his contract. The club's sporting department has already begun assessing possible replacements as they prepare for a new era in attack.
In recent days, Haaland's name has once again been linked with the Catalan club. Reports suggested that members of Victor Font's campaign team had spoken to Manchester City about securing a preferential option to sign the Norway international if he ever decides to leave the Premier League champions.
However, Haaland's agent Rafaela Pimienta quickly dismissed the suggestion that any such discussions had taken place.
Font nevertheless insisted negotiations were underway, claiming his group were trying to position Barcelona for a future opportunity.
"We are negotiating a purchase option for Erling Haaland for when he wants to leave Manchester City," Font said during the presidential debate.
Laporta responded sharply and pointed to Pimienta's denial as evidence the claim was false.
"The player's agent has already denied what Mr. Font has claimed," Laporta said. "This lie that Mr. Font has constructed has already been denied. It backfired. You have no sense of ridicule. They have already denied what you say."
Haaland remains under a long-term contract at Manchester City that runs until 2034, making any immediate move extremely unlikely.
While Barcelona will almost certainly target a new striker this summer, signing Haaland in the future would still represent a dream scenario for the club. For now, though, the Spanish giants appear to have no special advantage over other European clubs that may hope to lure the prolific 25-year-old away from the Etihad Stadium in the years ahead.
