Joao Pedro double sends Chelsea into Club World Cup final

The 60-million-pound signing from Brighton made an instant impact, scoring in each half against the club where he began his professional career. His second goal, a powerful strike on the counter-attack, sealed the result as Fluminense chased an equaliser in vain.

Chelsea's place in Sunday's final is now confirmed, where they will face either Real Madrid or Paris Saint-Germain. The semi-final, played in sweltering heat in New Jersey, saw moments of high drama and controversy.

Fluminense were incensed when a penalty awarded for a Trevor Chalobah handball was overturned by VAR. Replays showed Chalobah's hand was in a natural position, prompting the decision to be reversed - much to the fury of the Brazilian side's players.

Chelsea also had to rely on some defensive heroics, with Marc Cucurella clearing off the line after Hercules had rounded goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

Pedro's opener gave Chelsea the lead before half-time, and his second goal - a clinical finish on the break - ensured a comfortable victory in the end.

"I think it was a dream first start. I don't think it could have been better. Two goals, now we have to think about the final. I'm very happy," Pedro told DAZN.

"I'm happy to score my first goal, but also I know this tournament is very important for [Fluminense]. I can just say sorry but I have to be professional. I play for Chelsea, they pay me to score goals.

"Now I need to rest and focus on the final. It will be a very important game.

"It is going to be my first title as well, a very important and special game. I only came a week ago and I am going to play the final."
