Kaizer Chiefs announce Asanele Velebayi signing on 'long-term contract'

The 22-year-old had been locked in a legal battle with Spurs over his release, with his representatives insisting he was no longer bound by a professional contract after the Urban Warriors' relegation to the ABC Motsepe League.

NSL rules are understood to state that once a club gets demoted from the professional ranks amateur, players on contracts are immediately declared free agents, allowing them to join a team of their choice.

Spurs argued that they have invested in the player since his junior days and the player remained there property under a binding contract but ultimately lost the case.

Amakhosi have now made their move with Velebayi expected to join his new teammates for training as soon as possible.

Chiefs' sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jr said: "We are happy to finally have Asanele with us. He is a great addition, and we believe he will add significant value because he is a perfect fit for our game model and the culture we have here at the club."
