Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Mduduzi Shabalala draws confidence from COSAFA Cup experience
Kaizer Chiefs rising star Mduduzi Shabalala says his recent spell with the Bafana Bafana COSAFA Cup squad has given him a much-needed boost in confidence.
Japanese striker Koki Ogawa scored the only goal of the game in the 73rd minute at Sportpark De Passelegt.
Amakhosi had come into this game on the back of a 2-1 to Vitesse and 4-0 defeat to Utrecht.
This was a much improved showing from Nasreddine Nabi's charges as the coach started the tie with a new line-up.
The Eredivisie side were in control of the clash early on though and Brandon Petersen was forced into two strong saves.
Gaston Sirino enjoyed Chiefs' best chance of the first half in the 37th minute when he dribbled through a raft of Nijmegen defenders before rifling a shot on target that was well kept out by Nijmegen goalkeeper Gonzalo Crettaz.
Mfundo Vilakazi then fired in a free kick from the edge of the area that saw Crettaz make another good stop.
Nabi made a number of changes after the half-time break and Thulani Mabaso looked lively when he was put through on goal, only to be denied by Crettaz.
Naledi Hlongwane was on target with a bicycle kick but there was no way past Crettaz, but Ogawa was well-placed to fire home the only goal of the game against Chiefs' substitute keeper Bruce Bvuma.
Amakhosi will next face PEC Zwolle in their next preseason friendly game on Tuesday.
