Kalidou Koulibaly remains a doubt for Senegal ahead of 2026 FIFA World Cup

Kalidou Koulibaly remains a doubt for Senegal ahead of 2026 FIFA World Cup

The 34-year-old Al-Hilal defender picked up a thigh injury in training and has not played a competitive game since featuring in the Saudi Pro League victory over Al-Kholood at the beginning of April.

He has been in recovery for the past month but is not yet back to full fitness as the Lions of Teranga prepare to face France, Norway and Iraq in a tricky Group I.

Koulibaly was, however, included in Senegal coach Pape Thiaw's preliminary 28-man squad for the World Cup and is expected to make the final cut.

Fresh from the controversy surrounding their Africa Cup of Nations 'win', that saw the nation stripped of their title and handed to hosts Morocco, the country beat Peru 2-0 and the Gambia 3-1 in international friendlies.

They face the United States of America and Saudi Arabia before kicking off their World Cup campaign.

Thiaw said he is positive that Koulibaly will be fit to face France on Tuesday 16 June.

"We are monitoring his progress in collaboration with the medical staff. We will communicate on this at the appropriate time, when we have more certainty. But the progress is positive.

"We hope he will be ready. I think so and I believe he will be. We have confidence in our medical staff and our physical trainers," said the head coach on Africa Soccer.
