Late Tshegofatso Mabasa penalty denies Sundowns top spot as Stellenbosch earn draw

Sundowns looked set to capitalise on their game in hand over Orlando Pirates after taking control of the contest for long stretches, but a lapse in concentration late on proved costly. The result leaves them second on 57 points, one behind Pirates, who benefited from the slip despite not being in action.

Fresh from booking their place in the CAF Champions League final, the Brazilians rotated their line-up, restoring several key players including Grant Kekana, Aubrey Modiba and Marcelo Allende. Despite the changes, they were briefly unsettled early on when a defensive error from Modiba allowed Devin Titus a sight at goal, only for Ronwen Williams to intervene.

After weathering that scare, Sundowns began to assert themselves and were rewarded in the 27th minute. Katlego Ntsabeleng combined neatly with Arthur Sales before producing a composed finish into the top corner to hand the hosts the lead.

The midfielder's growing influence was evident, with the goal marking his second in as many league matches. Sundowns dominated possession and dictated the tempo for much of the first half, heading into the break with a slender advantage.

Stellenbosch, however, remained competitive and continued to threaten in moments. Olisa Ndah went close from a set-piece before halftime, while Omega Mdaka tested the defence early in the second half with a sharp effort from a tight angle.

Sundowns pushed for a second goal to kill off the contest, introducing Themba Zwane and Brayan Leon to inject further control and attacking impetus. Allende nearly doubled their lead with a powerful strike that forced a strong save from Sage Stephens, while Khuliso Mudau also came close with a header that drifted narrowly wide.

A potential second goal for the hosts was ruled out when Tashreeq Matthews found the net shortly after the restart, but the effort was disallowed for offside in a marginal decision.

Despite Sundowns' dominance, Stellenbosch stayed within reach and capitalised in the closing stages. With just minutes remaining, Khulumani Ndamane mistimed a challenge inside the box, bringing down Chumani Butsaka and conceding a penalty.

Mabasa stepped up and, after seeing his initial effort saved by Williams, reacted quickest to convert the rebound and level matters with four minutes to play.

The late equaliser ensured Stellenbosch claimed a valuable point, even as their winless run against Sundowns extended. For the hosts, it marked a missed opportunity to reclaim top spot, while Pirates will now look to take advantage in their upcoming Soweto derby clash against Kaizer Chiefs.

Sundowns, meanwhile, must quickly regroup as they continue balancing domestic ambitions with continental commitments, knowing that fine margins could yet decide the title race.
