Lucas Bergvall commits future to Tottenham with new contract

The 20-year-old had indicated earlier in the summer that he wanted to leave Spurs after struggling for regular opportunities in his preferred position during a difficult 2025/26 campaign.

That led to interest from several Premier League clubs, with Nottingham Forest reportedly having a 38 million pound bid rejected. Newcastle were also linked with Bergvall, while Aston Villa and Chelsea were reported to be interested.

However, Bergvall featured regularly during pre-season under new head coach Roberto De Zerbi and started Tottenham's Premier League opener against Brentford.

He has now opted to remain in north London and believes the club is moving in the right direction.

"I think we're building something great here. It's an exciting time for the club and that's why I'm happy to extend my contract," Bergvall said.

"I'm always trying to achieve as much as possible, to be the best version of myself both on and off the pitch and I know this is the right place to do that.

"Personally, my goal is to produce more for the team - performances, goals and assists - to help as much as I can. I'm getting better every day in training and I'm looking forward to what will be a really good season ahead."

Bergvall joined Tottenham from Djurgården in 2024 and has made 80 appearances for the club. He has played 45 minutes in the Premier League so far this season.

De Zerbi had previously described the midfielder as a "top, top, top player" but insisted in July that he would not attempt to keep a player who wanted to leave. The Italian also acknowledged that he had made mistakes in his handling of Bergvall during the turbulent final stages of last season.

The Spurs boss has since welcomed the midfielder's decision to stay and believes there is considerable room for further improvement.

"Every day in training you can see Lucas' desire to learn, improve and push himself to the highest level," De Zerbi said.

"Lucas is brave, he wants responsibility and has the personality to play in big moments.

"He also understands that development is a process and he has shown a fantastic attitude towards working on the areas of his game where he can become even better.

"I believe his best football is still ahead of him and we want to give Lucas the platform to reach his full potential."
